A Sunday Tradition | Toby Carvery Trowbridge Review

As a kid, every Sunday without fail we would have a roast dinner. Whether my Mum cooked it, or my Nan – even when we were on holiday we would even find a Carvery or somewhere serving Sunday lunch.

Since being married and having children, I have to say it isn’t a tradition that I’ve continued. Personally I find it too much to cook a roast dinner every week, as our weekends are always super busy, with homework, and trying to squeeze in the all important family time together. By the time you have shopped for what you need, cooked it, and then done the mountain of washing up, it seems to take a whole day, and its precious time that I don’t have to spend on one meal.

When we were invited to try out the new Toby Carvery in Trowbridge, we jumped at the chance. We don’t often eat out as a family as with five of us it does get expensive – especially if the kids don’t eat the food. I did know that they would polish off a roast dinner – the older two have roast every Wednesday for their school dinner, and it is always their favourite meal of the week.

We set off to Trowbridge on an October Saturday, and despite finding ourselves in thew wrong car park at first, we soon found our way in. The restaurant was lovely and warm and cosy – this was very much needed as we picked the day that Storm Brian decided to hit.

We were seated straight away by a friendly host, and given menus and colouring sheets and crayons for the children. We were positioned near a big fire, which wasn’t lit on the day we visited, but I imagine it would be lovely and very welcoming on a Winters Day. The decor was clean and cosy – with lots of ‘country-esque’ features, such as the huge hare print over the fireplace.

Our Waitress came and introduced herself – I feel so bad that I can’t remember her name as she was lovely, and couldn’t do enough for us. She took our drinks order – the kids were very excited that there were Fruit Shoots (their favourite treat when out for a meal), and we also ordered starters – cheesy garlic bread, and a cheese fondue. The waitress also explained that once we had finished our starters, we needed to join the carvery queue to get our main course.

The starters were reasonable for the price – they obviously weren’t gourmet cuisine, but they were tasty, and they were brought out quickly  – which is always appreciated with restless hungry children.

We then decided to split up to queue for our carvery (mainly because I had all my camera equipment on the table and didn’t want to just leave it there). I took Izzie and Ollie up to pick theirs and mine. There were four choices of meat – Beef, Turkey, Gammon and Pork, and we all pickled Gammon as we love it. There were a huge range of sides from roast potatoes, to cauliflower cheese, to traditional veg and yorkshire puddings. The queue was a little slow, but the kids were fascinated watching the chef serve the food up.

When we had chosen our food, a lovely waitress saw me struggling to carry mine and stop the kids from spilling theirs and offered to help us carry the plates back to the table.

Ell then took Mason up to get his  – the queue had gone down by that point and they were back much quicker than us.

As you can see the kids portions (above) are more than generous – perfect for hungry little people.

Ell chose to go for a Kingsize portion – as you can see his plate was stacked. He also went for a bit of each type of meat – it is always good to have the option of doing this.

As you can see the kids more than enjoyed their food – and still managed to make room for pudding. They all had a ‘make your own sundae’ which came with everything you needed – ice-cream, honeycomb and popping candy and chocolate flakes.

When we were done, we popped upstairs to the toilet (there is disabled access and baby changing facilities downstairs) and me and Izzie couldn’t resist a toilet selfie whilst waiting of the boys.

In summary, we really enjoyed our meal, we were all totally stuffed, and the service was fantastic and very prompt. Just as we were getting ready to leave, Mason kicked off in a typical toddler tantrum. Halfway home I realised we had forgotten o leave a tip, and felt awful as the service had been so wonderful. We will be back Toby Carvery Trowbridge(and making sure to tip double next time). It was lovely to be able to have a traditional Sunday lunch without any of the mess or fuss – every parents dream!
